From Mozart’s First Symphony to the Jupiter
Maestro Peter Bay joins Principal Timpanist Maria Flurry for an interview exploring the evolution of Mozart’s symphonic style, culminating in Symphony No. 41, the “Jupiter.” Using several symphonies from different points in Mozart’s career, they will trace changes in his musical language and approach to the orchestra. Short audio excerpts will allow participants to hear those developments along the way.
This class is presented by Yavapai College’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and is free and open to the public. Advance registration through OLLI is required.

Peter Bay has served as conductor of Arizona Philharmonic since 2018. He is also Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Piano Texas Festival. Bay has appeared with more than 80 orchestras, including the National, Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Dallas, Baltimore, and Fort Worth symphonies, and has held music-director posts with the Erie Philharmonic, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, and several music festivals. He is also the primary conductor for Ballet Austin.
Maria Flurry is principal timpanist of Arizona Philharmonic and also performs with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. Her orchestral career has included performances with the Detroit, Baltimore, Spokane, Phoenix, Toledo, and Annapolis orchestras, as well as work as a guest timpanist with other ensembles. She has appeared as soloist in multiple concertos and is active in chamber music, currently performing with Joshua Ferrell and Bensen Kwan in manos percussion and with her husband, composer and pianist Henry Flurry, in Sticks and Tones.
