Fall is a great time for gathering, meeting new people and making new friends.
From the Editor
Sandy Farrell, AZ Phil Event Coordinator and Newsletter Editor

After the resounding success of AZ Phil's season opener and getting used to a new venue, we are ready to take on the season. We've got a great group, and would like to introduce you to a few of them.
So many who volunteer with AZ Phil and bring their well-honed skill sets find not only the satisfaction of using their talents, but they also form lasting friendships.

Kris and Bobbie - The Dynamic Duo of Backstage Hospitality

Kris Parsons and Bobbi Bollinger have been leading the backstage hospitality volunteers for more than three years. They know their stuff. “We want musicians to have a welcoming experience when they perform with AZ Phil, and backstage is part of the experience. Some may travel long distances and we aim to make them feel comfortable and taken care of, and to share with other musicians so that they will enjoy it, too,” Bobbie said.

What Happens Backstage
The backstage volunteers are the first face of AZ Phil for musicians, they take care of snacks, water, answering questions, and sometimes the entire set up, because scheduling might need the rehearsal room to be broken down before AZ Phil musicians return. Bobbie and Kris come early to arrange hospitality tables with care, and stay late to clean up and secure the room—all with a smile. “We enjoy getting to know the musicians as they return throughout the seasons,” Bobbie said.

Bobbie says that after three years working together, she and Kris can finish one another’s sentences. Watching them at rehearsals, you can see they not only know what they are doing, but they enjoy it. Kris says providing musician hospitality has been quite enjoyable, "We like getting to know musicians and hearing the concert grow from rehearsal level to performance," commented Kris.

Kris and Bobbie are always up for making new friends, if you would like to bring your smile to AZ Phil's backstage, they would love to meet you. Feel free to click here and tell us Kris and Bobbie sent you.

The Wizard of Organzation
Larry Levenson — Volunteer Coordinator
Larry Levenson and board member Debbie O'Brien
at the 2023 Home and Garden Show in Prescott Valley.
Larry Levenson joined AZ Phil as Volunteer Coordinator in January, 2023 and his first order of business was adding to the volunteer roster, and setting up fun gatherings for people to get to know one another. He's done an admirable job since, accomplishing the innumerable tasks associated with orchestra performances, such as helping musicians find housing, ushering (new for Ruth Street), distributing promotional material, purchasing tickets, and other acts of administrative assistance.

"For the first performance, September 10 at Ruth Street, we had a lot of new balls in the air. Our first time at the new venue and needing ushers - something we hadn't before," Larry commented. Almost 40 volunteers were needed to help back and front stage, with administration, musician housing, ticketing and ushering, and Larry pulled them together. "Larry did a great job of volunteer team building in a short period of time," said Abby Coffey, AZ Phil Co-Executive Director.

In addition to the fun of being involved with a professional orchestra, volunteers are compensated with tickets to the event.

Bring your Skills to AZ Phil!
There is a current need for volunteers to help with some marketing tasks, such as:
  • iPhone photography, candid shots on the day of performance
  • Banner installation ~ 6 banners per performance
  • Rack card distribution
  • Sponsor and Donor Coordinator
If you'd like to help with any of these, or others, click here. Our marketing team would love to talk with you.

Upcoming Volunteer Meetings
Arizona Philharmonic volunteers are scheduled to meet at the Prescott Library in the downstairs Founders Room, Suite B, on October 28 and December 2, from 1:30 to 3:00pm. In addition to talking about volunteer opportunities there is often a musical performance and talk. Coming up in February, a conductor will explain how he is able to simultaneously conduct both a chorale and an orchestra.

“Volunteer meetings are a great opportunity to get together, make new friends, and learn new things about AZ Phil," Larry said.
Meet the Musicians - AZ Phil's First Chair Oboe Player
Laura Arganbright
Sandy Farrell, AZ Phil Event Coordinator and Newsletter Editor
If you want a living example of a young person who is self-driven, knows where they are professionally headed, and is enjoying the path of the multi faceted, demanding schedule she sets for herself, meet AZ Phil’s first chair oboe player, Laura Arganbright.

Enjoying the Freedom of Freelance
Laura acknowledges “freelance” is often seen as a dirty word but she says it is a good fit for her. “I encourage students to consider freelance work because you have autonomy and freedom. The financial end of it is a consideration, but it matches my lifestyle. I may feel differently in five years but I’m super happy with the path I’m own.”

“Some months I am busier in one category more than another and I like different schedules. I teach privately, play for recording sessions, perform guest recitals, pick up groups and play at churches.” In addition to working with AZ Phil she plays with Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and subs with Los Angeles Philharmonic. She enjoys working with the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) inspired by El Sistema, which provides music education in under-served communities.

How She Got Here
Laura began playing piano at six and through middle school switched from clarinet to flute and then added oboe.  “I’ve always been inclined towards music.”

Laura attended ASU for undergraduate and masters degrees and applauds music instructor Martin Schuring as an amazing all around teacher.  “He set me up with everything I needed to succeed, his fundamental instruction covered all the basics.”

She spent four years earning her doctorate at USC and along the way became established in the Los Angeles music community. The doctorate qualified Laura to teach college but she loves the variety freelance opportunities offer.

Laura was Acting Principle Oboist and then appointed by the board of directors to first chair. She played Marcello Oboe Concerto in her first concerto with AZ Phil in 2021.

Laura says playing with AZ Phil is different than other orchestras because, "it’s about consideration. There’s much more hospitality with little things like snacks and water. I always feel welcomed. It’s helpful because it’s recognition that we may need sustenance and they are saving us a $10 meal. Plus, I love working with Peter Bay, Joshua Harper and the whole AZ Phil family."

If you've had the joy of hearing Laura play, you know what a priceless gift she has, and we are thankful she shares it with Prescott.

Prescott Chorale Presents Fragments Oct 6+7, An Original Composition by Henry Flurry
In addition to helping manage Arizona Philharmonic, Henry Flurry has been diligently revising his composition called Fragments. This work is inspired by eight fragments of text from the Dead Sea Scrolls and explores themes of questioning, awe, thankfulness, and humility. The newly revised version of Fragments will debut on October 6 and 7, performed by the Prescott Chorale under the direction of Dennis Houser. This latest rendition expands upon the original by adding string and percussion accompaniment to the chorus.  More information about Henry, the performance and tickets here.
Sonoran Winds, featuring AZ Phil principal musicians performs November 19 in Prescott, and November 18 at ASU Kerr in Scottsdale.
