Pre-Concert Interview with Maria Flurry

Arizona Philharmonic's Principal Timpanist Maria Flurry took a few moments to chat with AZ Phil volunteers Don Baltzer and Sandy Farrell about Wood, Water, and Wolfgang, the manos percussion concert on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at Yavapai College Performing Arts Center.

Joining Maria on stage will be the other members of manos percussionEddie Solomon, Principal Percussion, Arizona Philharmonic; Homero Cerón, Former Principal Percussion, Tucson Symphony, and Fred Morgan, Second Percussion, Tucson Symphony. Special guests include narrator Marnie Uhl, soprano soloist Emily Spencer, and local visual artist Carlos Duran, who will paint a new work of art during a portion of the concert.

In the interview, Maria highlights the unique aspects and immersive elements of the concert.

Maria Flurry

We'll be introducing the percussionists of our upcoming February 5, 3 PM, manos percussion concert in these emails.

Maria FlurryMaria Vomlehn Flurry has performed with the Detroit, Baltimore, Spokane, Phoenix, Toledo, and Annapolis Orchestras as well as with orchestras across southeast Michigan. Ms. Flurry has also been guest timpanist with Michigan Opera Theater, Mannheim Steamroller, Phoenix Symphony, and she served as principal timpanist with the Flint Symphony Orchestra for over a decade. She currently is principal timpanist with Arizona Philharmonic and the Flagstaff Symphony.

She has performed as concerto soloist with Spokane Symphony, Flint Symphony, Arizona Philharmonic, Tucson Chamber Orchestra, Flagstaff Symphony, MusicNova, University City Symphony (Missouri), San Tan Orchestra, Prescott Symphony, and Prescott Chamber Orchestra. Maria Flurry and Waterphone from Tan Dun's Water ConcertoHer Spokane Symphony performance of Tan Dun’s Water Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra is listed among significant performances of this work on Tan Dun’s website.

Ms. Flurry has recorded with Summit Brass and the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and she received national attention as a founding member of Harpbeat, a percussion and harp duo. The group toured the Central States, made solo appearances with orchestras, and released three recordings to critical acclaim in Parenting and Family Fun magazines. She has premiered works written for her by Andy Thomas, Kenneth LaFave, Brian Zoelch, Ed Harsch, and Henry Flurry.

Maria Flurry - AndalusiaEducated at Interlochen Arts Academy, Peabody Conservatory, University of Michigan, Aspen Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, and National Orchestral Institute, Ms. Flurry served as faculty at the Hot Springs Music Festival and Chaparral Chamber Music Workshop. She has lectured at University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University, University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University. Ms. Flurry performs across the Southwest with her pianist/composer husband, Henry Flurry as Sticks and Tones.

Maria Flurry is a co-founder of Chaparral Arts, a nonprofit serving the performing arts in Arizona. Until its closure, Ms. Flurry served as a juried Roster Member of the Arizona Commission on the Arts both as an individual and as a member of Sticks and Tones.

Maria Flurry is an artist endorser for Black Swamp Percussion.
