Experience the Majesty of Mendelssohn's Elijah

Prophet ElijahArizona Philharmonic wraps up its 5th season Sunday, April 2 with Felix Mendelssohn’s iconic oratorio Elijah, featuring Dr. Joshua Harper’s 16-voice Quartz Ensemble, complimented by AZ Phil’s 13-piece chamber orchestration. “The clarity of diverse textures and styles – orchestral, choral, recitative, arias, and stunning vocal fireworks offers a whole new intimacy in this program,” commented Henry Flurry, AZ Phil’s Executive Director.

Elijah is presented for the first time in Arizona in a “chamber orchestration” by Johann Linckelmann. With a smaller professional choir, the vocal tones are crystal and pure, and the precision of AZ Phil’s instrumental section perfectly balances that. “Experience one of the repertoire’s most exciting pieces as we follow Elijah through trials, challenges, leading a battle of the gods, and his famous ascent to heaven in a chariot of fire,” added Dr. Harper.

Cailin MansonCailin Manson, who was featured in last season's Brahms Requiem, returns to sing the role of Elijah. Currently Associate Professor of Practice in Music and Director of Music Performance at Clark University, and Artistic Director of the New England Repertory Orchestra, he has been a guest cantor and soloist at some of the world’s most famous churches and cathedrals, including Notre Dame, Sacré-Coeur, and La Madeleine in Paris, San Marco in Venice, and Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, among others.

Quartz EnsembleQuartz Ensemble debuted with Arizona Philharmonic in season three, after AZ Phil had invited Dr. Harper to form a professional and auditioned choral ensemble to match the quality AZ Phil was presenting. Like AZ Phil, Quartz Ensemble pulls both local and regional musicians into the fold.

Dr. Joshua HarperIn 2021 over 1,500 arts lovers enjoyed the most famous oratorio, Messiah, conducted by Dr. Harper. Now experience Mendelssohn's almost equally famous oratorio, Elijah, with the stunning clarity and professional sounds of Arizona Philharmonic's and Quartz Ensemble's third collaboration.

Elijah will be performed Sunday, April 2, at 3pm at the newly-named Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center (formerly known as Yavapai College Performing Arts Center) in Prescott. Tickets and information at AZPhil.org.
