Luke Hill, Principal Violin 2

Luke HillArizona Philharmonic holds auditions to seat members in the orchestra. Last May, Luke Hill earned the position of Principal Violin 2. This means that second violinists watch and follow Luke in order to create a coherent sound. While Luke has played with us before, this is his first season as Principal Violin 2.

Luke Hill earned his Master’s degree in violin performance from Arizona State University, having studied with AZ Phil's concertmaster Dr. Katherine McLin.  Before ASU, Luke received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

If you are reading this from the Surprise, AZ area, you may know Luke as concertmaster of the West Valley Symphony, a position he's held since 2018. He also has had the opportunity to play in music festivals across the United States and Europe and study in Florence, Italy. Luke performs on a 1912 W.E. Hill & Sons violin.

October 2022 Concert Stage LayoutIf you wanted to find Luke in the orchestra, it helps to know where each section of the orchestra is placed. When the amazing staff at YCPAC set up for Arizona Philharmonic, they also need to know where the sections will be, so they can setup chairs and music stands. Before each concert, the conductor will send us a copy of the "stage layout" of where he or she would like the musicians to be seated or standing. Above is the stage layout drawing we received for our October 18 concert.

Arizona Philharmonic StringsLuke is Principal Violin 2. From his title, you can guess that he would be in the section marked Violin 2. Since he is principal, he would be in the front of the section, nearest to the conductor, and seated closest to the audience within that section. From the October concert's map, you can figure out that the front of Violin 2 is the third and fourth violinist in from the audience and closest to Maestro Peter Bay, making Luke the third violinist in. (Can you find him in the photo?)

Luke won't be as hard to find nor hear in Sunday's concert, since there are only five musicians. Luke performs as the principal violin in one of the trios, and as second violin in the piano quintet. And if you'd like to hear how hard Luke (and the rest of the ensemble) will be working, listen to this movement from Paul Schoenfield’s jazzy and sensuous Cafe Music, a piece that has great fun with many genres and styles.

The Sunday, January 8, 3 PM James D'León and Friends concert is a concert of beautiful music, high artistry, and amazing skills. We hope to see you there!
