Second Graders Composing for Orchestra??

Arizona Philharmonic's principal timpanist and experienced teaching-artist Maria Flurry talks of how AZ Phil, Highlands Center for Natural History, and Prescott Unified School District teamed up to give Lincoln Elementary 2nd Graders the experience of composing for orchestra.

You'll learn how the students' visits to the Highlands Center translated into emotions and narratives that they portrayed in music composed by each of the two classes. This unique outreach program introduced students to elements of orchestral music, explored what makes these elements contribute to the "musical message", and guided the students into applying what they've learned towards crafting a unique and beautiful orchestral work. Flurry also describes the behind-the-scenes work necessary to finesse the compositions into works that can be performed live.

Each of these short works will be premiered on this weekend's upcoming AZ Phil concerts, September 9 in Gilbert, AZ and September 10 in Prescott, AZ. We hope you enjoy this five-minute interview. And we hope you come to the concert to celebrate our community's beautiful creativity.

See you there!

Special Thanks to our Guest

Prescott Unified School District's Amy Van Winkle will join us on the Prescott stage to narrate the stories behind each class' composition. Amy has a multi-layered relationship to this concert: as a leader of outreach within PUSD, she helped coordinate this outreach program. And as PUSD Community Theater Events Manager, Amy has been AZ Phil's primary contact for making Ruth Street Theater our new home. Thank you, Amy!
