DESCRIPTION:To open the Arizona Philharmonic’s sixth season\, we have a pair of Czech composers from two generations. Dvořák’s Wind Serenade\, comes from 1878\, a time when he was first achieving international fame. It is filled to the brim with Czech/Bohemian musical flavor. Martinů’s engaging Sinfonietta “La Jolla” was composed in 1950\, when he was living in United States. This is very much a work of the 20th century\, but it also reflects the folk music of his native land. We close with one of the brightest of Beethoven’s nine symphonies\, the vivacious Symphony No. 4. \nAs an additional highlight\, Arizona Philharmonic will premiere two orchestral miniatures written with Lincoln Elementary School second graders during an Arizona Philharmonic spring 2023 residency offered in collaboration with the Highlands Center for Natural History and Prescott Unified School District.  \nClick the links below to hear the composition and see the score. DESCRIPTION:Chamber Orchestra with Quartz Ensemble \n\nMendelssohn: Elijah\n\nJoshua Harper\, Conductor \n\nIn their third appearance with Arizona Philharmonic\, Dr. Joshua Harper’s elite chorus Quartz Ensemble returns to our stage to present Felix Mendelssohn’s masterpiece\, Elijah. Building upon the success of last season’s Brahms’ Requiem\, Arizona Philharmonic presents another Arizona premiere of a Joachim Linckelmann chamber orchestra arrangement. Once again\, the stunning clarity of a 12-voice professional choir shines with the lighter orchestration that Linckelmann crafts. You will hear Elijah in a whole new intimacy. \nAs is frequently the custom in modern performances of Elijah\, Dr. Harper has removed a number of movements not critical to the story line in order to fit the work into a standard concert-length program. The numbers attached to the movements performed today represent the original numbers within the full oratorio.

The lilt of Renaissance dances permeates Peter Warlock’s most popular work\, Capriol Suite. Violinist Katie McLin solos in J. S. Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2\, which is both modeled upon and breaking with Vivaldi’s concerto form. Strum is an engaging celebration of American folk idioms by acclaimed composer Jesse Montgomery. And Edvard Grieg’s From Holberg’s Time\, Op. 40 is grounded in the 18th century contrapuntal style\, but with romantic colorations. DESCRIPTION:Full Orchestra \n\nMendelssohn: Piano Concerto No. 1\nBeethoven: Symphony No. 7\nArgento: Royal Invitation (Homage to the Queen of Tonga)\n\nPeter Bay\, conductor\nSteinway Artist Thomas Pandolfi on piano \nMaestro Peter Bay returns to Prescott to open Arizona Philharmonic’s fifth season with a joyful program. Argento’s Royal Invitation is a humorous ballet score on the famous appearance of a charming Tongan queen at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Pianist and Steinway Artist Thomas Pandolfi performs Felix Mendelssohn’s brilliant Piano Concerto No. 1. The concert closes with Beethoven’s exuberant Symphony No. 7\, a work that Richard Wagner famously called the “apotheosis of the dance.”

DESCRIPTION:Featuring flute\, clarinet and cello trio in the beautiful setting of the Kiwanis Amphitheater nestled in the cool pines. \nJULY 17\, 2022 \nTwo shows\, 2 and 4 pm \nIn case of rain\, the concert will be moved indoors.  \nEnjoy this unique trio of Arizona Philharmonic musicians\, featuring Mary Jackson (clarinet)\, Jeannette Moore (flute)\, and Marguerite Salajko (cello)\, who offer a concert of delightful and beautiful music.
