SUMMARY:Interactive Exploration of Percussion with Maria Flurry
DESCRIPTION:Before manos Percussion takes the stage at the Kiwanis Amphitheater on May 23\, Arizona Philharmonic timpanist and manos Percussion founder Maria Flurry leads a free OLLI class where participants can see the instruments up close\, ask questions\, and even try some of them. \nInstruments on hand will include timpani\, vibraphone\, and marimba\, along with world instruments and unusual percussion objects used in the Quarter Millennium Concert program. Attending the class first means hearing those instruments a second time when manos performs Saturday. \nThe class is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. It will be held Tuesday\, May 19\, from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM at Yavapai College Performing Arts Building\, Building 15\, Room 255. \nOLLI\, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Yavapai College\, offers learning\, social\, and teaching opportunities for adults 50 and older. The class is free\, with registration requested.

Korngold (of Hollywood film score fame) follows with four scenes from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing moving from an intimate bridal chamber to comic march\, garden scene\, and a hornpipe masquerade. After intermission\, Brahms’s Violin Sonata No. 3 anchors the afternoon with its long dramatic arc. DESCRIPTION:What does “excited” sound like? How about “stubborn\,” “silly\,” or “surprised”? During Arizona Philharmonic’s Third Grade Composition Project\, Prescott Unified School District third graders explored how composers use melody\, rhythm\, tempo\, dynamics\, and meter to turn feeling into music. Working with Arizona Philharmonic teaching artists and musicians\, each class helped co-compose music for recorder and professional ensemble. \nOn Friday\, May 1 at 6:30 PM\, these young composers and recorder players will perform their new work\, Musical Moods\, with six Arizona Philharmonic musicians at Ruth Street Theater. The short\, family-friendly concert includes light-hearted musical demonstrations and culminates in the students performing the piece they helped create. The concert is free\, general admission\, and no tickets are required. Come hear what happens when third graders listen\, imagine\, make choices\, and bring their own music to life.

Frederick Delius’s Prelude to Irmelin\, known for its lyrical beauty and serene\, fairytale atmosphere\, precedes the concert’s highlight: Nikolai Kapustin’s Piano Concerto No. 4\, Op. 56. Here\, D’León embarks on a thrilling and virtuosic ride\, blending classical precision with the spontaneous excitement of jazz. Dr. Harper’s 2024 Arizona Philharmonic and Quartz Ensemble concert received two separate standing ovations and was hailed as “breathtaking” and “exceptional\,” worthy of the “top cities and venues across the United States.” Come explore the profound emotional depth and musical intricacy of the St. John Passion through the elegance and clarity showcased by Arizona Philharmonic and Quartz Ensemble’s unique partnership. \nTenor Blake Beckemeyer thrives on exciting\, small-ensemble performances working on historical and text-driven interpretations of Baroque\, Classical\, and modern music.
