DESCRIPTION:Beethoven and Mozart: Virtuosity and Brilliance\n\nIn our season opening concert\, Peter Bay conducts three works whose composers answer what they have inherited. José Carlos Campos’s Danza rústica sets indigenous South American rhythm within the European orchestral tradition\, in four compact minutes. Steven Moeckel is the soloist in the only violin concerto Ludwig van Beethoven completed\, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto\, built on the French virtuoso style of Viotti and his followers. Beethoven wrote it for Franz Clement\, a violinist known for grace and expressive line\, and its virtuosity lives in sustained tone and long singing phrases. \nThe “Jupiter\,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 and his final symphony\, pairs ceremonial brilliance with wit and lyricism. He is also Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Piano Texas Festival. Bay has appeared with more than 80 orchestras\, including the National\, Chicago\, St. Louis\, Houston\, Dallas\, Baltimore\, and Fort Worth symphonies\, and has held music-director posts with the Erie Philharmonic\, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra\, and several music festivals. He is also the primary conductor for Ballet Austin. \nViolinist Steven Moeckel has performed as concerto soloist\, concertmaster\, chamber musician\, and recitalist throughout the United States\, Europe\, and Asia. A Laureate of the Sibelius Competition\, he has appeared with orchestras in repertoire ranging from the major classical and Romantic concertos to works by Shostakovich\, Corigliano\, Elgar\, Britten\, and Walton. He was the first Western violinist invited to perform The Butterfly Lovers concerto with a Chinese orchestra and has collaborated with musicians including Leon Fleisher\, Menachem Pressler\, William Wolfram\, and longtime recital partner Paula Fan\, with whom he has performed the complete Beethoven violin sonata cycle three times. \nMoeckel has deep ties to Arizona\, having served as Concertmaster of both The Phoenix Symphony and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. His other concertmaster positions have included Germany’s Ulm Philharmonic and the Santa Fe Opera. A graduate of the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg and Indiana University\, he joined the faculty of Northern Arizona University in 2020 as a tenured Professor of Violin. He is also active as an educator\, orchestral coach\, and advocate for string teaching\, and serves as artistic director of the Oxmoor Farm International Chamber Music Festival in Louisville\, Kentucky.

DESCRIPTION:Before manos Percussion takes the stage at the Kiwanis Amphitheater on May 23\, Arizona Philharmonic timpanist and manos Percussion founder Maria Flurry leads a free OLLI class where participants can see the instruments up close\, ask questions\, and even try some of them. \nInstruments on hand will include timpani\, vibraphone\, and marimba\, along with world instruments and unusual percussion objects used in the Quarter Millennium Concert program. DESCRIPTION:Close our 2025–26 season with husband-and-wife duo Katherine McLin (violin) and Andrew Campbell (piano) in a program that pairs musical dialogue with dance‑driven finales. It opens in Baroque elegance with a Leclair Violin Sonata. Zwilich’s Episodes gives that dialogue an American accent: a song‑like Arioso followed by a compact\, dance‑like Vivace. Korngold (of Hollywood film score fame) follows with four scenes from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing moving from an intimate bridal chamber to comic march\, garden scene\, and a hornpipe masquerade. After intermission\, Brahms’s Violin Sonata No. 3 anchors the afternoon with its long dramatic arc. DESCRIPTION:What does “excited” sound like? How about “stubborn\,” “silly\,” or “surprised”? During Arizona Philharmonic’s Third Grade Composition Project\, Prescott Unified School District third graders explored how composers use melody\, rhythm\, tempo\, dynamics\, and meter to turn feeling into music. Working with Arizona Philharmonic teaching artists and musicians\, each class helped co-compose music for recorder and professional ensemble. \nOn Friday\, May 1 at 6:30 PM\, these young composers and recorder players will perform their new work\, Musical Moods\, with six Arizona Philharmonic musicians at Ruth Street Theater. The short\, family-friendly concert includes light-hearted musical demonstrations and culminates in the students performing the piece they helped create. The concert is free\, general admission\, and no tickets are required. Come hear what happens when third graders listen\, imagine\, make choices\, and bring their own music to life.

Here\, D’León embarks on a thrilling and virtuosic ride\, blending classical precision with the spontaneous excitement of jazz. Dr. Harper’s 2024 Arizona Philharmonic and Quartz Ensemble concert received two separate standing ovations and was hailed as “breathtaking” and “exceptional\,” worthy of the “top cities and venues across the United States.” Come explore the profound emotional depth and musical intricacy of the St. John Passion through the elegance and clarity showcased by Arizona Philharmonic and Quartz Ensemble’s unique partnership. \nTenor Blake Beckemeyer thrives on exciting\, small-ensemble performances working on historical and text-driven interpretations of Baroque\, Classical\, and modern music. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Philharmonic is pleased to present a new interactive “lecture” series during each concert cycle for the 2024 – 2025 season.  \nPrior to each Sunday performance\, on Saturdays at 11am at the Ruth Street Theater\, Arizona Philharmonic guest artists will engage lecture participants in lively coachings\, discussions\, and workshops based on various musical and artistic aspects of the upcoming concert. Enjoy creating personal connections with high-caliber musicians and artists in this unique lecture series. \nOn Saturday\, December 7th\, join Barb Metz\, Arizona Philharmonic Board Vice President and musicologist\, for an engaging dive into the beautiful and festive spirit of holiday music from Europe throughout the ages. You won’t want to miss this event!\nWhat makes Renaissance music different from other styles of music? Is it the music theory\, the instruments\, the character\, or a little of each? During this interactive lecture\, you will not only learn about festive holiday music from Europe\, but the nuances of music from the Renaissance period\, including demonstrations performed on period instruments\, like the viola da gamba. \nPlease note this event requires a ticket\, and is separate from the pre-concert talk at 2pm on Sunday\, December 8th. \nTickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children for general admission. \nLocation is Ruth Street Theater at 11:00 am on November 23.\nIf you are an OLLI member\, visit YC.EDU here to see what discounts are offered on this series. \n\n

Copley\, the beloved and recently retired regent’s professor of Northern Arizona University’s Chorale department. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or a first-time participant\, this event invites you to bring your own Messiah scores and join in the choruses\, or simply bask in the surrounding music. With the powerful combination of professional musicians and community voices\, you can both hear Handel’s Messiah and become an integral part of its performance\, creating a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. Messiah scores will be available for purchase at the door.
