SUMMARY:From Mozart’s First Symphony to the Jupiter
DESCRIPTION:From Mozart’s First Symphony to the Jupiter\n\nMaestro Peter Bay joins Principal Timpanist Maria Flurry for an interview exploring the evolution of Mozart’s symphonic style\, culminating in Symphony No. 41\, the “Jupiter.” Using several symphonies from different points in Mozart’s career\, they will trace changes in his musical language and approach to the orchestra. Short audio excerpts will allow participants to hear those developments along the way. \nThis class is presented by Yavapai College’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and is free and open to the public. Steven Moeckel plays Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Peter Bay conducts the Jupiter\, Sunday October 4 at Ruth Street Theater. \n\nPeter Bay has served as conductor of Arizona Philharmonic since 2018. He is also Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Piano Texas Festival. Bay has appeared with more than 80 orchestras\, including the National\, Chicago\, St. Louis\, Houston\, Dallas\, Baltimore\, and Fort Worth symphonies\, and has held music-director posts with the Erie Philharmonic\, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra\, and several music festivals. He is also the primary conductor for Ballet Austin. \nMaria Flurry is principal timpanist of Arizona Philharmonic and also performs with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. Her orchestral career has included performances with the Detroit\, Baltimore\, Spokane\, Phoenix\, Toledo\, and Annapolis orchestras\, as well as work as a guest timpanist with other ensembles. She has appeared as soloist in multiple concertos and is active in chamber music\, currently performing with Joshua Ferrell and Bensen Kwan in manos percussion and with her husband\, composer and pianist Henry Flurry\, in Sticks and Tones.

SUMMARY:Community Chats with AZ Phil: Flamenco Rhythms and Dances
DESCRIPTION:Community Chats with AZ Phil: Flamenco Rhythms and Dances\n\nFlamenco is organized through distinct song-and-dance forms called palos\, each with its own rhythmic character. Chris Burton Jácome and Lena Jácome will explore how different dances use distinct 12-beat and four-beat patterns\, known as compás\, with accents placed on different beats. Through clapping\, guitar\, and dance\, they will demonstrate how these patterns shape movement and how the dancer signals changes that the guitarist follows in real time. Participants will have opportunities to clap the rhythms and try the patterns themselves. \nThis free OLLI class is presented by Yavapai College’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and is open to the public. Jácome Flamenco joins AZ Phil flute and strings for Bach\, Chopin and flamenco\, Sunday November 1 at Ruth Street Theater. \n\nChris B. Jácome is the artistic director and creator\, Jácome Flamenco\, Chris writes the music and lyrics for all of the touring company’s productions and has toured extensively throughout the US and beyond. \nIn November of 2015\, Chris’ first feature film score “Just The Vampire Hunter” was released and is receiving RAVE REVIEWS! Chris’ compositions can be heard scoring the Emmy Award Winning PBS television special: “Flamenco” (broadcast in Arizona by KAET-TV Channel 8: Mike Sauceda\, producer) and on popular TV shows such as “Touch”\, “Kyle xy” and “Greek”. Two of Chris’ original songs appeared in the film “Amreeka” which was a jury selection for the Sundance Film Festival and won the Fipresci Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. Chris’ flamenco version of the Christmas Classic\, “Joy to the World”\, was included in Coldwater Creek Catalogue’s 2004 Christmas CD. Additionally\, Chris can be heard as the featured soloist in the movie soundtrack of the feature film\, “9/tenths”. \nChris’ music has received critical acclaim from the beginning of his career. From Chris’ debut CD\, Motivación\, the title track “Motivación” finished in the Top 10 in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest World Music Category. Since his first CD’s debut Chris has written and recorded three other original flamenco albums: Pa’lante\, Flamenco and LEVANTO. LEVANTO features the music\, lyrics and even the footwork from the flamenco spectacular by flamenco dance company\, CALO FLAMENCO. TWO of Chris’ original songs from LEVANTO\, “Ritmo-Canix” and “Sin Ti” won the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest! \nLena Jácome is an internationally touring flamenco dancer\, choreographer and instructor with Jácome Flamenco. She performed as\, and choreographed for the role of ‘Flamenco Dancer’\, in Teatro Bravo!’s presentation of ‘Lorca in a Green Dress’. She was an invited guest artist to perform for the Ibero-American Association in Jakarta\, Indonesia and she was an invited guest performer & instructor for the Dance Network of South Dakota. Some performance highlights include Jazz at Lincoln Center\, New York City Center and she guest performed in the World Premiere of the Pangean Orchestra at Symphony Hall. She performed and choreographed for the first symphonic work to include flamenco dance entitled\, ‘Impulso’\, composed by Chris Jácome and Henry Flurry. This work was premiered in St. Louis\, Missouri with The University City Symphony Orchestra. \nShe has assisted in the creation of an extended long term multi-residency dance curriculum for the Baton Rouge\, Louisiana dance community and she has set work on various groups ranging in age and in various facets of programming; from University settings to private dance studios and everything else in between. \nLena attained her B.F.A. Degree in Dance Performance at New World School of the Arts in Miami\, FL and earned her M.F.A. Degree in Choreography and Performance at Arizona State University. She is currently a Roster Artist through Surprise Arts and has been awarded professional study grants through the National Endowment for the Arts to study in Spain. She has studied from such artists as Juana Amaya\, Concha Vargas\, La Faraona and Saray Montoya. She toured with Calo Flamenco under the direction of Martín Gaxiola and worked with Noche Flamenca & with guest choreographers such as Isabel Bayón and Juan Ogalla during their extended summer residency program at Scottsdale Center for the Arts. \nLena returns frequently to Spain to teach\, perform\, study and provide immersion programs for dancers & musicians. DESCRIPTION:Community Chats with AZ Phil: Behind Christmas Music\n\nASU Professors Katherine McLin\, Professor of Violin and Concertmaster of Arizona Philharmonic\, and Andrew Campbell\, Director of the ASU Collaborative Piano Program\, explore the stories behind a selection of Christmas music. They will discuss familiar carols\, works with unexpected seasonal connections\, and pieces that became associated with Christmas long after they were written. Drawing on Campbell’s extensive experience with Christmas choral music\, they will combine personal stories\, discussion\, and live performance. The class will include music from Arizona Philharmonic’s December 6 concert and opportunities for participants to sing along. \nThis free OLLI class is presented by Yavapai College’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and is open to the public. Four voices\, one of Bach’s Christmas cantatas and the carols\, Sunday December 6 at Ruth Street Theater. \n\nViolinist Katherine McLin is Concertmaster of the Arizona Philharmonic and maintains an active career as a concerto soloist\, recitalist\, chamber musician\, and orchestral leader. Since debuting with the Oregon Symphony at age 15\, she has made well over 100 solo appearances with orchestras nationwide and released more than 20 recordings on the Summit\, Centaur\, and Opus One labels. She also serves as concertmaster of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra (Columbus\, Ohio) and has collaborated with artists including Gil Shaham\, Bela Fleck\, Rhiannon Giddens\, and Leslie Odom Jr.\, including ProMusica’s May 2024 residency with Jon Batiste that premiered his first piano concerto. McLin is Professor of Violin at Arizona State University and holds the Evelyn Smith Professorship in Music; she has been invited twice by the American String Teachers Association to present national conference master classes. She earned a doctorate in violin performance from the University of Michigan\, with additional degrees from Indiana University and the Oberlin Conservatory\, and performs on a 1709 Gobetti violin on loan from ProMusica. \nPianist Andrew Campbell is a versatile collaborator whose work spans chamber music\, opera\, and orchestral performance. He has appeared internationally across Europe\, South Africa\, and Asia\, and throughout the United States. Campbell has directed summer music programs in Germany\, Luxembourg\, and North Carolina\, and serves as Faculty Artist at Rocky Ridge Music in Colorado. His recordings include Cantando with bassoonist Albie Micklich\, and recent highlights include serving as principal pianist for the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra in summer 2024. As a vocal coach\, he has worked on the music staffs of Washington National Opera and San Diego Opera\, collaborating with conductors Andre Previn and Heinz Fricke and working with composer Carlisle Floyd. Campbell studied with Martin Katz at the University of Michigan and is Professor of Music and Director of Collaborative Piano at Arizona State University.

Miki Aoki\, Luke Hill and Wesley Skinner play Handel\, Fazıl Say and Tchaikovsky\, Sunday February 14 at Ruth Street Theater. \n\nCellist Wesley Skinner is the principal cellist of Arizona Philharmonic with degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Arizona State University. Wesley explores innovative programming through cross-disciplinary collaboration with female and Latin American composers\, as well as commissioning new works for the cello repertoire. He has won awards internationally as a soloist and chamber musician in addition to his music composition for theater here in Arizona. Wesley works with hundreds of cellists yearly between his private studio\, summer teaching\, and community outreach.
