SUMMARY:Flamenco Rhythms and Dances
DESCRIPTION:Community Chats with AZ Phil: Flamenco Rhythms and Dances\n\nFlamenco is organized through distinct song-and-dance forms called palos\, each with its own rhythmic character. Chris Burton Jácome and Lena Jácome will explore how different dances use distinct 12-beat and four-beat patterns\, known as compás\, with accents placed on different beats. Through clapping\, guitar\, and dance\, they will demonstrate how these patterns shape movement and how the dancer signals changes that the guitarist follows in real time. Participants will have opportunities to clap the rhythms and try the patterns themselves. \nThis free OLLI class is presented by Yavapai College’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and is open to the public. Advance registration through OLLI is required. \nAdmission \n\n\n\nFree Admission\, Registration Required\n\n\n\n\nThen hear it whole. SUMMARY:Tierra Flamenca: Guitar\, Dance\, and Classical Roots
DESCRIPTION:Tierra Flamenca: Guitar\, Dance\, and Classical Roots\n\nChris Burton Jácome and Lena Jácome return to the AZ Phil concert stage in Prescott with flamenco guitar and dance in a program that keeps trading places. Lena dances to Johann Sebastian Bach’s unaccompanied Prelude from the Cello Suite No. 1. Chris’s guitar and the ensemble’s improvisation reshape Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D\, while his guitar reinterprets the piano part in Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat and the accompaniment in Jules Massenet’s Méditation from Thaïs. \nThe oldest music is by Diego Ortiz\, a Spaniard who spent his working life in Naples and Rome. His Trattado de glosas of 1553 is a manual for improvising over a written bass\, and the Recercadas sobre tenores italianos heard here come from it\, aligning with Chris’s flamenco improvisation nearly five centuries on. \nClassical instruments take up flamenco as well\, with AZ Phil’s flute and strings joining the guitar and dance in Chris’s own pieces: guajira\, malagueña\, sevillanas\, verdiales\, tonás\, tarantas\, alegrías\, and The Kiss. These forms carry the geography and history of flamenco with them\, from Cuba\, Cádiz\, Málaga\, and Seville to the mining country of southeastern Spain. \nPre-concert talk at 2:00 pm. \nAdmission \n\n\n\nTier 1: $69.00\nTier 2: $54.00\nTier 3: $28.00\nStudent with ID: $10.00\n\n\n\n\nThursday October 29\, free: Chris and Lena Jácome break flamenco into its forms\, where a twelve-beat cycle carries accents you learn to clap\, and show how the dancer cues a change that the guitarist follows on the spot. Watch for it on Sunday. \n\nHave questions about attending a concert? Our Concert FAQs cover parking and entrances\, when to arrive\, what people wear\, and how long the concert runs. \nWorks on the program: \n\nChris Burton Jácome: Guajira · Malagueña · The Kiss · Sevillanas · Verdiales · Tonás · Tarantas · Alegrías\nJohann Sebastian Bach: Prelude from Cello Suite No. 1\nFrédéric Chopin: Nocturne in E-flat\, Op. 9 No. 2\nJules Massenet: Méditation from Thaïs\nDiego Ortiz: Recercadas sobre tenores italianos\, from Trattado de glosas (1553)\nJohann Pachelbel: Canon in D\, arr. SUMMARY:Echoes Across Time: Music for Piano Trio
DESCRIPTION:Echoes Across Time: Music for Piano Trio\n\nMiki Aoki joins Luke Hill and Wesley Skinner in a different combination for each piece: violin and piano\, then cello and piano\, then all three. George Frideric Handel’s Violin Sonata opens the afternoon. It was his last piece of chamber music\, and its closing dance returned as the sinfonia that opens the third act of Jephtha\, the oratorio he set aside in February 1751 when the sight in his left eye began to fail. \nFazıl Say’s Four Cities takes the cello through four Turkish cities: the melancholy of a saz in Sivas\, a fast Black Sea dance in Hopa\, a wartime protest song in Ankara\, and jazz in the bars of Bodrum\, ending in a pub brawl. Our principal cellist Wesley Skinner calls it one of the greatest cello works written this century. \nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky once told his patron he could not endure the sound of piano with violin and cello. Then Nikolai Rubinstein died\, and Tchaikovsky wrote his Piano Trio in A minor in Rubinstein’s memory. Rubinstein had been one of the great pianists of the age\, so the piano part grew until it came close to a concerto. \nMountain Artists Guild joins us for the third time\, with a juried show responding to the music\, on stage and in the lobby. \nPre-concert talk at 2:00 pm. \nAdmission \n\n\n\nTier 1: $69.00\nTier 2: $54.00\nTier 3: $28.00\nStudent with ID: $10.00\n\n\n\n\nThursday February 11\, free: cellist Wesley Skinner takes you inside this program. \n\nHave questions about attending a concert? Our Concert FAQs cover parking and entrances\, when to arrive\, what people wear\, and how long the concert runs. \nWorks on the program: \n\nGeorge Frideric Handel: Violin Sonata in D Major\nFazıl Say: Four Cities\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in A minor\n\nEqually celebrated as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and collaborative artist\, Miki Aoki brings exceptional versatility and depth to her performances\, which have captivated audiences across Europe\, Asia\, and the Americas. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano at Arizona State University. \nDr. Aoki made her debut at age 12 at the Royal Festival Hall in London as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra\, and has since performed at Carnegie Hall\, the Barbican\, and festivals including the Salzburger Festspiele and the Menuhin Festival Gstaad. She records exclusively for the German label Hänssler Profil; her four albums include Tokyo Story\, a world premiere of music from the films of Yasujiro Ozu in their original piano manuscript versions. She earned degrees from Indiana University\, Yale University\, and Stony Brook University\, and completed the Konzertexamen with distinction at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Miki Aoki is a Steinway Artist. \nViolinist Luke Hill is the concertmaster of the West Valley Symphony and assistant concertmaster of Arizona Philharmonic. A graduate of Arizona State University\, where he studied with Dr. Katherine McLin\, and the University of Colorado studying under Charles Wetherbee. Mr. Hill has performed internationally at festivals such as Brevard Music Festival and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. He has also studied abroad in Florence\, Italy\, and Saarburg\, Germany\, and performs on a 1912 W.E. Hill & Sons violin. \nCellist Wesley Skinner is the principal cellist of Arizona Philharmonic with degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Arizona State University. Wesley explores innovative programming through cross-disciplinary collaboration with female and Latin American composers\, as well as commissioning new works for the cello repertoire. He has won awards internationally as a soloist and chamber musician in addition to his music composition for theater here in Arizona. Wesley works with hundreds of cellists yearly between his private studio\, summer teaching\, and community outreach.

SUMMARY:Beethoven Goes to the Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven Goes to the Dogs\n\nMaestro Peter Bay leads the final concert of our season in unexpected company: Ludwig van Beethoven’s first symphony shares a stage with a pack of cartoon dogs. Those dogs are Thurber’s Dogs\, a suite of short orchestral sketches by Peter Schickele\, better known as his satirical alter ego P.D.Q. Bach\, after the drawings of James Thurber. Each movement captures a different personality\, clumsy or noble or distracted\, and each is crafted with charm\, precision\, and Schickele’s sharp ear for musical character. \nOur principal oboist Laura Arganbright is featured in Marie Clémence de Grandval’s Oboe Concerto\, a lyrical and poised work from 1877. Grandval studied with Chopin\, and Paris’s most prestigious orchestra played this concerto in her lifetime. Then it disappeared. Laura proposed bringing it back\, drawn to “a relatively unknown female composer whose music is newly being rediscovered.” \nPeter Maxwell Davies wrote Farewell to Stromness as a protest against a uranium mine proposed for Orkney\, where he lived. Its slow walking bass carries the townspeople out of their homes\, and its gentle\, sometimes sad lyricism understates what the protest won: the mine was never built. Davies later said the piece had almost become a folk tune. The concert concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1\, a bold and youthful entry into the symphonic tradition he inherited from Haydn and Mozart. Playful in its turns and grounded in Classical form\, the finale reveals the personality of a composer just beginning to make his mark. \nPre-concert talk at 2:00 pm. \nAdmission \n\n\n\nTier 1: $69.00\nTier 2: $54.00\nTier 3: $28.00\nStudent with ID: $10.00\n\n\n\n\nThursday April 22\, free: conductor Peter Bay on the program that puts Beethoven’s First Symphony in the company of Schickele’s Thurber’s Dogs. \n\nHave questions about attending a concert? Our Concert FAQs cover parking and entrances\, when to arrive\, what people wear\, and how long the concert runs. \n\nWorks on the program: \n\nPeter Schickele: Thurber’s Dogs\nMarie Clémence de Grandval: Oboe Concerto in D Minor\, Op. 7\nPeter Maxwell Davies: Farewell to Stromness\nLudwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 1 in C Major\, Op. 21\n\n\nThe story behind each work\, a closer look at the music\, artist biographies and a glossary. \n\n\n\nPeter Bay has served as conductor of Arizona Philharmonic since 2018. He is also Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor of the Piano Texas Festival. He is also the primary conductor for Ballet Austin. \nDr. Laura Arganbright is the principal oboist of both the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and the Arizona Philharmonic. A versatile performer\, she has played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Pacific Symphony\, Modesto Symphony\, and Jacaranda Music\, among others. As a soloist\, she has appeared with the Bakersfield Symphony in Oscar Navarro’s Legacy\, with Arizona Philharmonic in Marcello’s Concerto in D minor\, and in the world premiere of Viet Cuong’s Extra(ordinarily) Fancy. \nA dedicated educator\, Laura is the Oboe Teaching Artist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s YOLA program and has worked with The Harmony Project and USC’s Thornton Community Engagement Program. She maintains a competitive private studio and is active in reed-making pedagogy\, having coached reed-making for oboe majors at USC. \nLaura holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California\, where she was honored with the Brandon Mehrle Service Award. She studied with Joel Timm\, Marion Kuszyk\, and Lot Demeyer\, and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Arizona State University under Martin Schuring.
