About Ruth Street Theater

The 2020 Ruth Street Community Theater GalaMoving to Ruth Street Theater reflects AZ Phil's commitment to growing the availability of professional level stage-space within the Prescott area. This 700 seat theater sits on the Prescott High School campus and opened its doors in 1993. In 2019, AZ Phil partnered with Prescott Unified School District, Prescott Chorale, and other local arts leaders to explore renovating Ruth Street Theater and opening the stage to the community. While COVID interrupted the community concert series planned for 2020, PUSD moved forward with the plans that had been proposed. Ruth Street Theater now shines from new paint, new carpeting, new signage, an extended stage, new sound system, and (soon) new lighting.

With the renovations of the Ruth Street Theater, the venue becomes the perfect new home for AZ Phil. The acoustics of Ruth Street Theater are the best of any large venue in town. Plus there are no dead sound-spots in the hall which require electronic sound support. Sight lines are fabulous: every seat has a clear view of the entire stage. At Ruth Street Theater, audiences will have a more intimate experience with our performances.

Performing at Ruth Street Theater also benefits our conductors and musicians. The orchestra is able to rehearse on the stage, and the stage acoustics allow musicians to hear each other easily. Plus we are now able to plan our seasons well in advance.

The Season Ahead

Anton NelAnd speaking of planning, we have a vibrant season for the year ahead. Maestro Peter Bay returns to conduct two concerts, one featuring Beethoven's Fourth Symphony, and the other featuring world renowned pianist Anton Nel performing Mozart's Ninth Piano Concerto. Dr. Joshua Harper and his Quartz Ensemble return to perform a varied program of J. S. Bach to Mendelssohn to Caroline Shaw, among other composers. Our resident Sonoran Winds Quintet returns in November, and James D'León with principal AZ Phil string players return in February. We also bring back 2021's twice sold-out We Wish You Christmas concert, featuring the beautiful vocal stylings of three esteemed Arizona sopranos with a fresh set of holiday works.

We encourage you to sign onto AZPhil.org to learn more about the concerts. In future emails I'll discuss the concerts in more detail and share other exciting developments in AZ Phil's growth.

We look forward to seeing you!

- Henry Flurry, Executive Director
